The design construction planning and project management of Air New Zealand’s No. 1 hangar at Christchurch Airport has won for a team of Wellington consulting engineers the 1980 award of merit from the Association of Consulting Engineers. The engineering team of Messrs J. P. Hollings, L.

G. Cormack. R. J. Holbrook, and V. Jowsey are from the company of Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner, Ltd. The hangar, completed in June, 1978, is Air New Zealand’s main maintenance base for its domestic fleet of Boeing 737 and F 27 Fokker Friendship aircraft.

The building has several innovative design features, including means to confine damage from fire or severe earthquake to ensure that the hangar can still be used after such an event. The award was announced at the annual conference of the association at Rotorua at the week-end.
