Women’s hockey successes

The Canterbury women's, A and B hockey team's met with success in their first representative games of the season at West Melton yesterday. Canterbury A beat Mal» vern A 5-0 and Canterbury B beat Malvern B 4-0.

Canterbury A was quickly on attack against Malvern but poor trapping at vital stages allowed Malvern to clear.

It was well into the half when the first goal was scored. Nicki Sherriff caught a rebound from, Malvern’s goalie’s pads. Play was held up for some time after Canterbury captain, Pat Barwick, and Malvern’s inside-right Heather Henderson, had a spectacular collision, and both had to leave the field. Henrietti Carroll ' (Canterbury) and Hilary Jebson (Malvern) replaced them. . Canterbury scored its second goal when Reid stopped the ball from a penalty-cor-ner and the shot ended high in the corner of the net. Malvern fought back with

f some hard hitting and good control but were stopped by the Canterbury full-backs. Malvern made use of long passes to feed its fast-break-ing forwards and was rewarded with penalty corners, but was unable to break Canterbury’s sound defence. Canterbury’s third goal was scored by Reid. Malvern’s defence was slow out at a penalty-corner allowing Reid plenty of time for a shot.

Shirley Haig, easily the best player on the field, scored Canterbury’s fourth. Canterbury added its fifth goal when Sherriff in a solo run down the middle struck the ball hard past the goalie. For Malvern left full-back Lorraine Croy was outstanding. She broke up many Canterbury attacks, and always cleared the hall to a player. The inside forwards, Lois Gilmour and Hilary Jebson, also played well.

Canterbury B’s goals were scored by Barbara Mitchell (2), Alison Sutherland and Jane Earnshaw.
