Big punt pays off
PA Wellington A Palmerston North punter, Mr Jim Wilson, a shearer, hit the jackpot at the Trentham races on Saturday. He bet $240, and took home $56,381 as his half-share of the prize. He and his wife, Mona, have just celebrated 25
years of marriage. The win was quite an anniversary present, he said. He might use some of the money to build a car shed, and buy a car to put in it. But his wife fancies a colour television and new furniture. They have eight children and seven grandchildren.
Mr Wilson’s ' co-jackpot winner, Mr Mike Murphy, of Auckland, who landed the other half of the $112,763 tote,, was not saying how much he outlayed for his lucky picks. But he did admit to hitting a jackpot in Reefton to the tune of $lB,OOO in 1977.
