Aggressive Canty hockey team runs not

An aggressive Canterbury hockey team ran unchecked through a hapless South Canterbury team at Porritt Park yesterday winning, 120.
South Canterbury was extremely unfortunate to strike a Canterbury team that decided to pass the ball and keep dribbling to a minimum. It did its duty’ so effectively that by the interval it lead, 7-0, and by the end the score would have been several goals greater but for some outstanding saves by the South Canterbury goalkeeper, Dave Stuthridge. Canterbury switched the ball about with such precision that the usually well
organised South Canterbury defence was in bewildered disarray for most of the match. The goal that took Canterbury to double figures epitomised the Canterbury forward effort. Selwyn Maister took a free hit in centrefield outside the South Canterbury 25m line. He clipped the ball through a marginal gap behind the South Canterbury - defence for George Carnoutsos the right-wing to run on to the ball, and from the back-line his cross found Barry Maister in front of the goal. Several other goals were initiated by centimentre--per-fect through passes, mostly from the inside-right, Bal-
vant Bhana. and the centrehalf, Selwyn Maister. The greasy surface seemed to worry the Canterbury forwards little after the first few minutes, and they stamped their dominance on the match from the time the
first goal was scored by Bhana in the fourth minute. Canterbury’s share of the game was well illustrated by die corner count. It had 13 penalty-corners and the same number of corners, and South Canterbury had three penalty-corners and four corners.
In spite of spending the' majority of the match; defending, South Canterbury; was constructive in its attempts to breach the Canter-; bury defence. Several times its forwards broke through in the first-half but poor fin-
’ ishing allowed the cover defence to clear the circle. > Ross Smith on the right- ’ wing, Graeme Davies at inJ side-right, and Graeme > Stanburv at centre-forward 1 combined well several times ! but lacked the close control • in the circle to complete the movements.
All the Canterbury players had good games but some; jwere more outstanding. Carnoutsos was adept at finding; space and gaps on the left-! wing in the first-half, and the right-wing in-the second. At inside-right Bhana’s passing continued to show rapid improvement which must have been pleasing for the Canterbury coach, Cyril Walter, knowing that an encounter with the national champion Auckland is just two weeks away. Mark Burtt at inside-left tended to dribble across field too often, something the Auckland defence will be content to let him do in two) weeks. I The other forwards, Barry;
; Maister, and two who played iihalf a game each — Chris ■Maister- and Steve Ambler ;i— all contributed to the vol■iatile attack. I Canterbury' scorers were: Bhana in the fourth minute ; and the 24th, 27th and 67th from penalty-strokes, Barry i Maister sth, 12th, 48th and ■ 59th, Ross Ambler, 17th and I 41st, Carnoutsos 33rd, and ■ Chris Maister 62nd. 1 Canterbury B beat South Canterbury B, 6-1, and in under-age games Canterbury! : under-19 beat South CanterI bury under-19, 4-1, Canterbury under-17 beat South • Canterbury under-17, 6-0, )|and Canterbury under-15 (beat South ’ Canterbury Tunder-15, 3-L
