Flowers into bowls
Exhibition by David Brokenshire at the U.S.A. Gallery until July 20. Reviewed by Frederika Ernsten. The first impression of this exhibition is a vast quantity of small and me-dium-sized bowls. The theme chosen by David Brokenshire is “A flower becomes a bowl, a bowl. . . a flower.” While some of the pieces have been particularly successful, others did not quite succeed.
Forms such as No. 45 are interesting, but of all pieces, coming nearest to his theme of flowers are Nos. 5, 12, and 14, with their translucent petals and delicate colouring. But for quality and texture among the bowls, I would choose Nos. 129, 152, and 216. This exhibition shows the fun and frustration that potters have when using porcelain as their medium. In most examples, Mr Brokenshire has used the clay to its full
pountial and has been to give it the beautiful'translucency and texture \f true porcelain. Of\ll his glazes, I find the sat pale blue celadons and <\eamy yellows — sometiijes with delicate dark tolouring in the centre the most satisfying. \ To appreciate fully this show, oq needs to look carefully look again; each timethere will be a piece you'did not notice before, T\is exhibition should not missed.
