Refugee resettlement appeal
The Inter-Church Commission on Immigration and Refugee Resettlement is appealing for funds to help its refugee resettlement programmes. The commission hopes to raise $60,000 in the appeal. The money will be used tO’ finance the resettlement centre at Mangere, which is partly supported by a Government grant. The director of Christian World Services (the Rev. B. Turner) said the 1.C.C.1. focused on refugees from Indo-China, but also helped resettle refu-
gees from Uganda. He said there was a strong resettlement programme in Christchurch, where about 350 Indo-Chinese refugees had been resettled since 1977. So far this year more than 590 refugees have entered New Zealand through the Mangere Centre. A further 145 came through the family reunification scheme. The National Council of Churches expects that 1800 refugees from IndoChina will come to New Zealand this year.
