Profitable dole tax
PA Wellington The Government is reaping more taxation from the unemployed than it bargained for. When the measure to tax the unemployment benefit paid to people with no dependent children was introduced last year, the Government estimated that the increase in tax revenue would be about $9.5 million.
However, the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Gair) has said that on the basis of the present number of beneficiaries, it was estimated the annual tax yield was about $l5 million. Mr Gair said that it cost the Department of Social Welfare an estimated $290,900 a year to administer the tax.
