Girl shot by police dies
NZPA London Gail Kinchin, a 16-year-old Birmingham girl hit by four police bullets s a gunman used her as a shield, died yesterday in Fast Birmingham Hospital. Gail had been critically ill in the hospital’s intensive care unit for more than a fortnight. A full police inquiry is going on into the shooting. Gail, was taken hostage by a man who had earlier also kidnapped Gail's mother, Mrs Josephine Wood. Mrs Wood escaped, but the gunman continued to hold Gail in a flat while keeping the police at bay. Then as the man. who had said he was going to kill the girl, attempted to leave the flat using her as a shield the police opened fire with handguns. The police captured the man, who was not injured.
