Shannon women to discuss closings

PA Wellington A group of concerned Shannon women will call a public meeting today to talk about the issues facing the small Horowhenua town. Shannon is faced with the closing of two industries. Fibremakers’ union delegate. Mr Rex Mai, said that many of the women were confused. The organiser of the meeting, Mrs Karen Straw, said last evening that the meeting was intended to help workers' wives understand the position.

“There are so many conflicting statements about what is happening that it. is very hard for the women to understand.” she said. The meeting is intended to explain the exact situation to them. Mr Mai has agreed to be on hand to answer questions. Once the issues have been clarified, the meeting’s organisers believe that they can create a united front to face the problems. Mrs Straw said that alternative work would be studied.
