Australia accepts daring Rumanian escapers
NZPA Canberra Australia has accepted for resettlement 20 Rumanians who hiade a daring escape from their homeland to Austria in a vintage Soviet-made transport aircraft last week. An immigration official said yesterday that the Rumanians, from five families, were expected to leave Vienna for Australia between July 19 and 21. “Our embassy in Vienna has interviewed them and they have been accepted in principle, subject to normal medical and character checks,” the official said. The Rumanian nationals captured world headlines when they succeeded in reaching Austria after a 358 km trip over Hungarian airspace in the old bi-plane. The aircraft took off from Arad, about 20km from the Hungarian border in Western Rumania, according to reports. Two hours and nearly 400 km later it narrowly missed a high-voltage line while its pilot was attempting a crash-landing in a cornfield in the Austrian province of Steiermark, 140 km from Vienna. The aircraft was reported to have been running out of fuel, and the pilot picked the cornfield; as a crash-landing site.. - ”
