LIVING WITH THE SEA

Country Living by Sea and Estuary. By Suzanne Beedell. David and Charles, 1980. 250 pp. $24.95.

(Reviewed by Doreen Mansbridge)

For anyone living, or contemplating living, by the sea and interested in all aspects of their environment, Suzanne Beedell’s remarkably detailed book is a virtual encylopaedia in one small volume. Although written for Britain’s shores, much of the information is general and New Zealand merits soecial mention by virtue of our “huge and exciting” sea shells.

The book is written with infectious enthusiasm — weather, water sports, fishing, safety, birds, photography and

plants are but some of the topics, plus unusual and proven knitting patterns for warm and protective headgear and mittens, and the most mouth-watering recipes for lovers of sea food. Excellent information on buying a second-hand boat, the type to suit the use and the signs denoting seaworthiness, is explained clearly and in detail in the chapter on small boats. Another section deals with beachcombing and the intricacies of sea law.

Each chapter concludes with a list of book titles for further reading and is generously illustrated with photographs and diagrams.
