N.Z. lawnmowers for Australia
A New Zealand company, Electrolux, Ltd, in Wellington, has won a major export order for lawnmowers to Australia.
The company only began making the Flymo type of lawnmower — which works on the hovercraft principle floating on a cushion of air — a few months ago. The export contract is for more than 1000 machines and further orders are confidently expected. With spares the initial order is worth more than $lOO,OOO,
and this could be doubled by the end of the year. Winning the export deal has already meant five new jobs at the factory and further export orders will create further employment opportunities. “The company won the Australian order in the face of stiff competition from Australia and other international manufacturers. Our machines not only matched those made elsewhere, but were superior in some respects, and were priced more competitively,” said Mr Walter Baumann, Electrolux factory manager. The lightweight electric machines are particularly popular for lawns on sloping hillsides or for those who do not like starting or handling a heavy machine.
