Budget provisions criticised
Budget provisions for a tax-free subsidy on new hotel building irr Auckland and a 5 per cent domestic air travel tax were a further set-back for the development of Christchurch Airport, the Labour mayoral candidate, Mrs Mollie Clark, has said. Events had shown that the Government’s regional development policies at the last election were “electioneering in the most sinister sense of the word,” she said. “This Government . has done absolutely nothing to promote the interests of the South Island,” said Mrs Clark. She accused the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hamish Hay) and Citizens’ Association councillors of making only “muted mutterings of protest” against the Government. The South Island needed “leadership, inspiration and motivation” but it was getting little of these from the Citizens’ Association, she said.
