Change of command
The Army’s Burnhambased infantry battalion will have a change of command. At a parade at Burnham Camp today, the commanding officer 'of the 2nd/lst Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (Lieutenant-Colonel A. L. Birks) will hand over the regimental Colour and command of the 400-strong unit to his successor, LieutenantColonel A. L. Manuera. Originally from Northland, Colonel Manuera graduated from the Officer Cadet School, Portsea, Australia, in 1962 with the Sword of Honour. He served with the Special Air Service Squadron in Borneo during the Indonesian confrontation, and was awarded the Military Cross. i He served again in Ma-i laysia and in Vietnam. After 1976 he was an instructor at the Malaysian Army Jungle Training School. In 1978. Colonel Manuera became the military assistant to the Chief of Defence Staff, until he was posted to Rhodesia as a member of the Commonwealth peacekeeping contingent. This year he became sec-ond-in-command of 2nd/lst Battalion at Bumham. Colonel Birks will become the deputy regional commander of 3 Task Force in Christchurch, before moving to the Ministry of Defence in Wellington at the end of the year.
