Export success by quick footwork
A lower Hutt biscuit manufacturer has developed a continuing new market in Singapore potentially worth more than $lOO,OOO a year. Within three months Griffin ' and Sons Ltd will have shipped nearly- $50,000 of biscuits to a Singapore organisation for distribution to major supermarkets.
The general manager of the Export - Import Corporation, Mr C. B. Stanworth, said that three separate sales had been made since the Singapore Food Asia exhibit.
The Singapore buyer noticed the biscuits on the corporation’s stand and showed firm’ interest because of the
[ natural ingredients used including sugar, wholemeal," cheese and honey. “But organising the sales, required quick and continuing follow up after the exhibition and we were fortunate that our New Zealand trade centre manager (Mr W. Gooch) was on the spot and able to carry it out on behalf of Griffins,” Mr Stanworth said.
“He even negotiated a price increase after a rise in the cost of New Zealand sugar which pushed biscuit prices up.” Griffins sold nearly $2 million of its production overseas in 1978-79.
