Racing and trotting Midknight picked for first leg of Otago double

Special correspondent Dunedin Midknight is first choice in the Otago Hunt’s Tally Ho Handicap at Wingatui today after his decisive win at Washdyke on Saturday.

Midknight carried 52kg on Saturday and he has been rehahdicapped 2kg for his win but effectively he is up J. skg on the weight he carried to success in the fraser Handicap (1600 m Midknight will again be ridden by Shane Laming, the Riccarton apprentice, who broke a losing streak of 84 rides when successful on Saturday. Laming, who is apprenticed to his father, Bevan, the trainer and partowner of Midknight,- had his previous ■ win on Or 1 Boy at Riccarton on February 29. Midknight’s win- came after a fourth in each of his three previous starts at Washdyke, Ashburton and Oamaru. Lamplight has been placed in six of her last starts all at middle distances. She could find 1600 m too short, but a heavy track should be in her favour. Tiva was runner up to Belle Camille over 1600 m at Wingatui on -May 31 on a heavy track. The track proriiises 'to be similar today. Hasuka was runner-up to Aramis over 1600 m on a soft track at Wingatui in September. He comes in fresh today and is bright after a course of jumping. Boy from Dundee, which finished third at Washdyke nine days ago could be a threat. Waideene, a winner on the course last month and since' successful at Washdyke, is fancied for the Taieri Handicap,* second leg of the T.A.B. double.

Waideene’s. Wingatui win was over 1600 m and his Washdyke success over 2100 m. Willie Dee was an easy winner over 2200 m on the first day of the Otago Winter meeting, holding bright prospects for his chance. Tommy Bar, runnerup at Washdyke on Saturday after being held up near the straight entrance is also high on the list of fancies.
