Eight lives left?
Firemen used their own breathing apparatus to revive a cat which they had rescued from a burning house at 16 Fusilier Street, Halswell, last evening. “He wasn’t too well, so they gave him a few whiffs of oxygen to bring him round,” said a Fire Service spokesman.
Just to be on the safe side, the S.P.C.A. was called in, but the cat quickly recovered from his ordeal.
The occupants of the single-storey bungalow were out when the fire broke out soon after 8 p.m. Engines from the Spreydon and Sockburn stations attended, and firemen
were able to save the house. Moderate fire and smoke damage was caused to two rooms.
A young man who was dragged unconscious from a burning house on Wednesday evening is still in the intensive-care unit at Christchurch Hospital. Lawrence Fa r a gher, aged 21, was still seriously ill last evening, but his condition had improved slightly. Firemen found Mr Faragher slumped in a shower cubicle of a blazing house near the New City Hotel in Colombo Street after he had tried . to warn occupants. The house had been empty when the fire broke out.
