SIDELINES -* \ '

THE TRANSFER of the Canterbury rugby league forward, Rex Dalzell, was short-lived. Dalzell moved to Auckland last month and played one match for Northcote, but he has now returned to Christchurch and will be resuming his association with the Linwood dub. However, his return to the playing fields will be delayed for a while — in his one northern appearance Dalzell had the misfortune to fracture a thumb.

IT WOULD be no surprise if the president of the Australian Rugbv League, Mr Kevin Humphreys, insists that all future tests in Auckland coincide with trotting meetings at Alexandra Park. The Kiwis and Kangaroos were guests at last Saturday night’s racing, and Mr Humphrey’s winnings were rumoured to be between $2OOO and S3OOO. The New Zealand players had a far less rewarding evening, even though several leading South Island reinsmen were also staying at their motel.

FIVE CANTERBURY people have joined the ranks of qualified water polo coaches, one of them an expatriate, however. When Bill Dyson conducted the Shirley Lodge coaching clinic at QEII Park in the May holidays, not only the players were under examination; six coaches were seeking their certificates, and five of them passed. Heading the list was Vicki McGregor, closely pursued by Bill Millward (once of the north-western suburbs, but now teaching in Tawa) and Brian Callandar. And two young players, both 16-year-olds, passed their certificates: Bruce Wilson and Nigel Ward continued the growing trend of teenagers getting themselves involved in coaching.

THE 1980 ISSUE of “Wisden” offers a reminder of the excellent contributions made in the county championship by the four New Zealanders who are regular players in it. Glenn Turner topped Worcestershire’s batting aggregates in championship matches with 1669 runs an_d was second to Younis Ahmed in the averages with 57.55. John Wright was first in Derbyshire’s averages, with 1135 runs at 39.13 and Geoff Howarth scored 1238 at 47.61 to lead the Surrey averages. Richard Hadlee’s 37 wickets at 16.59 put him first in the Nottinghamshire bowling averages.

THE MOST INCREDIBLE site at Carlaw Park last Sunday preceded the second rugby league test between Australia and New Zealand. It was of the mayor of Auckland (Sir Dove-Myer Robinson) wearing a T-shirt embossed with the slogan, “K’mon Kiwis, K’mon,” being carried around the ground by the prominent New Zealand athlete, Robin Tait,- and another well-built fellow who later amused himself and the crowd by blowing up hot water bottles. “Robbie” was celebrating his seventy-ninth birthday and, as president of the Auckland Rugby League, it was logical that he should spend some of it at the park.

ALF STAMP’S three goals for Blockhouse Bay against Manurewa recently was the fourth time he has achieved the feat in the Rothmans Soccer League. lan Ormond holds- the record with six while four players, Graham Dacombe; Earle Thomas, Jim Richardson and the English professional, Steve Elliott, have each managed three. Three goals in a match have been managed 57 times in the league, 12 coming in .1971 but the worst year was 1975, when none were attained.
