Taieri emergency extended
PA Dunedin As more than 300 people are still unable to return to their waterlogged homes, the civil defence emergency for the flood-stricken Taieri Plain was extended yesterday as pumping and the task of clearing the debris left by the deluge continued. The emergency will last another seven days. It was hoped floodwaters would be below floor level in most of the homes by Sunday, the Otago Catchment Board’s design engineer (Mr A. M. Torrance) told a civil defence meeting at Mosgiel yesterday. More favourable weather, allowing the catchment board workers to breach the floodbank on the Taieri River has permitted a more rapid flow-off of floodwaters from farmland, but water from low-lying areas may have to be pumped towards the breach. Then will come the task of clearing paddocks strewn with logs and debris.' Health and building, in-
spectors are checking each house as families are allowed to return. Known stock losses so far amount to about 80 cattle and 1770 sheep. About 15 cattle were still inaccessible by vehicle but would be removed as soon as possible, a Ministry of Agriculture livestock officer, Mr A. Diack, said yesterday.
