Iraqi security forces’ the Government announced. • The Information Minister (Mr Latif Nasif Jassim) told a news conference that the three men broke into the embassy, threw two bombs, and began shooting at random.

There were no casualties among the embassy staff, he said.

The Minister said the security forces received permission from the British Ambassador to enter the embassy. Asked about the identity of the attackers, he said investigations were continuing. He blamed imperialism, which he said wanted to mar the first general election held in Iraq for 20 years. The election is being held today.
