Marine Division to new quarters
The Lyttelton shipping office of the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport has been temporarily split up, while plans go ahead for the construction of a new building. The division’s nautical surveyors have been shifted to temporary quarters in the former tunnel authority building at Heathcote and. within the next fortnight, the remainder of the office, including chart sales, will be shifted from the present building in Canterbury Street to the rooms formerly occupied by Dr N. Chambers in Oxford Street. According to the regional marine officer for the Ministry (Mr P. J. Williams), the move to Oxford Street will be made “about the beginning of July.” at which time demolition of the old building will be started. The office will remain in Oxford Street until a new building has been erected on the present Canterbury Street site, which will house both the Marine Division and the Customs Department, which at present occupies the Port Building in Norwich Quay. The Oxford Street premises became available recently when Dr Chambers shifted his surgery to the new Lyttelton Health Centre building. The old brick and -wooden building in Canterbury Street is believed to be about 100 years old. It has housed a variety of businesses, including a sail maker. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7.8 a.m.), 2500.
