Close golf contest
In a very even contest at the Southland Golf Club’s course at Oreti Sands, MidSouth Canterbury prevailed by a stroke ever Wellington in a representative contest between five associations. The two-day Rotary and Radio Southland event raised about $4OOO for charity. On the first day, five-man teams from Wellington Canterbury, Mid - South Canterbury, Otago and Southland, played 18 holes on the long and difficult seaside course, the four best scores counting towards the team’s total.
An excellent round of 72 — which broke the course record by one stroke — by the Freyberg representative, Robbie Bell, helped MidSouth Canterbury to its narrow victory. Team scores were: Mid-South Canterbury 309, Wellington 310, Southland 311, Canterbury 315, Otago 317.
lan Ross, the Canterbury Freyberg reserve last year, had the best individual score for his team .with 75 and. the captain, John Williamson, 77. Other. Canterbury scores were: Ricky Vincent (78), Gary Maw (82)' and Fred Poskitt (82). On the second day, Otago and Wellington, the top teams in the Southland invitation teams’ event earlier this year, opposed each other and Canterbury was matched against Southland in match- play. Canterbury had a heartening 3|-1J win, Williamson, with two birdies over the last three holes, beating Jim Lapsley, 2 up, in the top match. ■ Maw • beat Paul Adams, 1 up, and Poskitt downed Gary Radka, 5 and 4. Vincent halved with Kevin Potts, but Ross was beaten by 'Gary Hildyard,. 1 down. .
