Coober’s Queen’s debut delayed

NZPA Melbourne The New Zealand filly Coober’s Queen has had her Australian debut delayed by a stone bruise. Her trainer Peter Melville had entered Coober’s Queen for Tatt’s Plate at Flemington on Monday and galloped the filly on Saturday. On Sunday Me Ivi 11 e noticed that the filly was sore in her near front leg and investigation showed a small stone bruise.

Nobody was more surprised by the scratching of the horse on Monday morning than top jockey Roy Higgins.

“I was sweating madly in the sauna for the ride when I heard on the radio that she had been scratched,” Higgins said. “It was the first I had heard of it. In fact I haven’t even spoken to the trainer and was booked for the ride through the V.R.C.,” Higgins added. Melville has been something of an enigma since arriving in Australia and has not been available to comment on the filly’s future programme. Coober’s Queen has won 14 of her 35 starts and was last season’s New Zealand Filly Of The Year.
