The economy

Sir, — While R. L. Pluck (June 16) rightly focuses on the devaluation of our dollar overseas, there is an even graver aspect of the economy which has also been given the low-profile treatment. It is five publishing days since it was announced on television that New Zealand’s debts now amount to more than $10,300 million. Have I missed your editorial concerning this catastrophic state of our economy? Is my calculator at fault or does this work out at an unbelievable $3433 plus per head of population? If correct, is this not cause for alarm and despondency? Maybe you classified the subject as “not in the public interest?” Then again, perhaps you refrain from comment out of concern for the sensitivities of reactionary Muldoonists? Would you have been as charitable if- Labour, had lost control to such a horrific extent? — Yours, etc.,

ARTHUR MAY. June 16, 1980.
