7.8% quota of refugees from Laos

PA Wellington New Zealand plans to accept 140 refugees from Laos in September, according to the Under-Secretary for Immigration (Mr Malcolm). They would be part of this year’s quota of 1800 refugees, he said. The refugees would be selected soon from camps in north-east Thailand by immigration officers of the Labour Department, he said.

There were at present very few Laotians in New Zealand and it was expected the new arrivals would join, their compatriots in the main cities where work and English-language training were more readily available. “The *Laotian people have become a forgotten group in the turmoil of South-East Asia. Many of them have been in remote camps for years longer than either the Vietnamese or Kampucheans and in some cases their refugee status predates the fall of South Vietnam,” Mr Malcolm said.
