Power scheme costs less than expected

PA Wellington Total expenditure in the first year of the Government’s South Island electricity concession scheme will be less than the $14.3 million origin -fly announced as the full annual cost when the scheme was introduced last April, the Minister of Regional Development CMr Cooper) said.

Answering a question by Mr S. J. Rodger (Lab., Dunedin North), Mr Cooper said the Government had approved 2437 applications from South Island manufacturers for the 25 per cent electricity subsidy. The approvals carry a value of $9,185,968.

Mr Cooper said 3505 applications had been received from South Island manufacturers and the 2437 approvals were based on a consideration of 2535 applications. The shortfall in Government spending on the concession was because payments were being made on a six-monthly basis. Since there was a lead-

time involved in making the payments, not all the conession expenditure for 1980-81 would be incurred this financial year, he said.
