PA Aucklani The Mayor of Auckland Sir Dove-Myer Robinson,.be came 79 on Sunday with some, harsh • words for th< advocates of automatically retiring workers at the agt of 65. “I am very much against it," he sar’. “I think it is a waste of a tremendous amount of knowledge anc experience- that people gain in a lifetime. I am against compelling people to do anything: I guess I am a bit of j an anarchist in that re- ! spect.” 1 Sir Dove-Myer said the City Council had a j compulsory retirement age ■to avoid toe unpleasantness iof having to ask people to ■step down whe t.iey were ■no longer able to do' a job but this was often extended Tor competent workers. Sir Dove-Myer last week [announced that he would ! stand fo. his seventh term 'as Mayor, amid calls for him not to stand for re-elec-tion because of,his age. He got up early on Sunday to split logs for firewood, went over his books with his accountant, had a family
gathering, attended. the [rugby league test between Australia and New Zealand and the formal reception afterwards, and spent the evening studying the agenda for ah Auckland Regional Authority meeting this evening.
