Mary Read: The Duel... Said to have been bom in London and brought up as a boy, Mary Read ran away to sea and served on a man-of-war, afterwards fighting with the troops in Flanders and showing great bravery. While on a vessel bound for the West Indies she was captured by an English pirate, Captain Rackam, and joined his crew as a seaman. Mary Read fell in love with and subsequently married a “young fellow of engaging behaviour” captured by the pirates, and actually fought a duel with one of her fellow-pirates to save her lover’s life. She died in prison, 1720.
