Silver Stirrups to Callan Light
; Callan Light, ridden by Sharon McFarlane (Southland), added yet another victory to his record with a clearcut win in the Atlantic Silver Stirrups open horse twoday trial held at Riccarton Racecourse. lAt the end of the first day’s dressage and show jumping phases, Callan Light dropped from his leading position in the dressage to second place when he dropped a rail in the show jumping. Leading at this stpge was last year’s winner, Dusky Bay, ridden- by Florence. West (Loburn), having only two penalties less than Callan Light. Julie Fenemor- (Nelson) on Carnaughliss Boy was in third place. \ .The second day’s endurance phase of steeplechase, roads and tracks, and cross country _w a ® held in arctic conditions which was hard luck for the organiser, the junior committee. of the New Zealand Horse Society, Canterbury area. .Mark Todd, winner of this year’s prestigious Badminton event, rode around viewing the cross-country and talking to members despite the freezing conditions. The course rode well,' with very few spills duty ihg_ the day. The open class horses had no problems apart from time penalties for some. 'Callan Light, fresh from his national three-day event win at Taupo last' week, was the only horse ' to complete the cross country without time penalties, thus ‘ putting him back in the lead for a convincing win. DUsky Bay and K. Beange s Barry John, another promising Southland combination, finished with equal penalties. However, Barry .John was placed second oa~ having the faster cross country time, with Dusky Bay third. •Faru, ridden by Zena Chart (Hawarden), held his dressage lead right through, being clear
in aU phases, to win the large novice class of 35 starters, Faru was placed' third in last year’s novice class and was a member of this year’s CanterburyWestland pony club team. Second for the second successive year was Brent Jury (Ohoka) riding Codey, followed by Angela Murrell (Southland) riding Spartacus. ... ■ . - - . The open pony had an exciting finish with only one-fifth of a penalty point separating the winner, Golden Banner, ridoen by Connie Mayhew (Kaiapoi), from Equality, ridden by Donna Beck (Christchurch). Golden Banner was reserve for the Canterbury-Westland pony club team this year, while Equality was placed second in the same event last year when ndden by Cynthia Preece. Very close behind in third place was Julie Shroy’s Dominique, this com- : bination coming from Hinds. Results: — _ _ ' Open class.— Dressage: S. McFarlane’s Callan Light 1, Mrs 1 F.
