Mihaka not a Maori agent, says Judge
PA Wellington The Maori activist, Te Ringa Mangu Mihaka, has no right in law to appear in the District Court as a Maori agent, Judge Kearney has ruled. He convicted Mihaka on a charge of disorderly behaviour in the District Court at Wellington last March 27. Mihaka, aged 38, who described himself as a professional political agitator, had pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was convic-. ted and ordered to come up for -sentence ■ within six months if called on. He had also pleaded not guilty to failing to give his particu-
lars while in custody and on this charge he was remanded at large to June 17. Mihaka was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour in the No. 3 District Court in March when he tried to appear for Diane Prince, who had been charged with wilful damage. He asserted that he had the right to do so as a Maori agent. The presiding justices of the peace, Messrs N. W. Kilgour and E. J. Hodgkinson, refused Mihaka the right to appear as a Maori agent but were prepared to let him appear as a friend of Prince’s. - •
