Hebrides policy agreed
NPA-Reuter Venice The French President, Mr Valery Giscard d’Estaing and the British T’rime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, yesterday agreed to try to resolve the rebellion in the New Hebrides - peacefully. They decided at a private meeting that their two Governments should remain in closest touch in handling the problem, a British spokesman said. The New Hebrides Chief Minister, the Rev. Walter; Lini, has asked Britain and France, which administer the (islands, to intervene militarily [to crush the revolt, on the I secessionist island of Espiritu | Santo. The French sent in 55 paramilitary gendarmes of the New Caledonia based “guardemobile” on Wednesday night, but pulled them out 24 hours later on orders from Paris, saying the situation was calm and they were not needed. Father Lini’s Government asked Britain and France, which have governed the 100,000 people in the islands for 74 years, to declare a state of- emergency.
