Blistering assault
jNZPA Cambridge, England; ! The West Indian batsmen: launched a blistering assault on the Combined Universities attack to take the lead on the opening day of their two-day match at Cambridge yester- ’ day. Gordon Greenidge (44) and j Desmond Haynes (32) put on i 66 for the first wicket, the : first 50 runs coming in 27 i minutes. Then Faoud Bacchus 1 (79 not out) and Lawrence ' Rowe (53 not out) joined in < an unfinished third wicket partnership of 132 in 90 ( minutes. <
: The touring team hit 218 ifor two in 140 minutes in reply to the Universities’ four for 208 declared. Sent in to bat in the morning, the Universities were not intimidated by the West Indians’ four-pronged pace attack. The Cambridge opener, Aziz Mubarak, hit 86, including 15 fours, in 138 minutes at the wicket, and the Cambridge all-rounder, Derek Pringle, scored 50 not out in 53 minutes. The West Indies’ most successful bowler was Colin Croft with three for 71.
