Sportsmen honoured

Among New Zealand sports personalities to be awarded an M.B.E. in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List is Richard Hadlee, of Christchurch.

Hadlee receives the M.B.E. for services to cricket.

Hadlee, who has played in 26 test matches, made his debut in first-class cricket for Canterbury in a provincial match against Auckland, in Christchurch, in 1971-72.

A former All Black, lan Kirkpatrick, of Gisborne, receives the M.B.E. for services to rugby. Mr Kirkpatrick has played in 39 international matches and has played in more than 230 first-class games.

A Westport woman, Mrs Irene Reid, receives the M.B.E. for services to bowling, a sport in which she has been involved for more than 36 years. Mrs Reid won her first bowling title in 1943 and since then has won a number of national titles and held senior administrative posts in the sport both at local and national level.

Another prominent person in local swimming, Mr Maurice Duckmanton, is also awarded the M.B.E. For the last 30 years he has served in the Amateur Swimming Association and has held almost every administrative position available and has occupied all of the official positions for the control of competitive swimming.
