Theatre Royal
Sir, — The Canterbury , regional committee of the New
Zealand Historic Places Trust commends the action of the Theatre Royal Group in raising funds and making a deposit on the theatre. My committee trusts that success will attend the combined efforts of the Theatre Royal Group and the Friends of the Theatre Royal to raise the total purchase price and sufficient funds for progressive refurbishing. The council of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust itself in March, 1975, resolved to express its support for local efforts to save the theatre and the director of the trust stated then that it seemed clear that the building could only be saved by sympathetic private acquisition. The Canterbury regional committee believes that restoration of the Theatre Royal warrants enthusiastic support from the public. — Yours, etc., J. L. HEWLAND, Chairman, Canterbury Regional Committee, New Zealand Historic Places Trust. June 13, 1980.
