4 killed in clashes

NZPA-Reuter Zamboanga City At least four people were killed and six wounded over the week-end in clashes between troops and Muslim separatist rebels in the southern Philippines. Military sources said yesterday that about 15 heavily-armed rebels attacked a village in Sulu Province with grenadelaunchers, killing two villagers and wounding five others before escaping. One soldier was killed and rebels suffered an unknown number of casualties in a clash in another part of Sulu, also over the weekend. On nearby Basilan Island, rebels killed one hitchhiker and wounded another when the cargo truck in which they were travelling was ambushed. In Manila, President Ferdinand Marcos has directed the national intelligence and security authority to take over investigations into an attack on a city hall last week in which nine people were killed and 17 wounded. President Marcos issued the directive after a meeting with local officials and ranking military officers from the provincial capital of Cabanatuan, 100 km north of Manila.
