Rongotai radar was out of action
PA Wellington The radar at Wellington Airport was out of action on seven occasions in the 10day period to Friday, June 6, the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) told Parliament yesterday. The Minister said electrdnic interference had shut idown the radar for a total of 40 hours and 47 minutes over that -period. Thirty-three aircraft, including 18 scheduled national flights, had been delayed for more than five minutes by the need to use standby landing procedures, he said. Mr McLachlan said the maximum period of inconvenience occurred on June 3 when four planes were forced to stack on to a holding pattern above the aircraft. The radar had been restored and .fully operational since last Friday evening, he said.
Mr McLachlan was replying to a question by Dr M. E.' R. Bassett (Lab., Te Atatu) who raised the question of the radar last week, saying that its inadequacy was causing delays to the travelling public and leading to a large-scale wastage of fuel by circling aircraft.
