Labour, Mr Rata to talk?
?A Auckland Mana Motuhake and the Labour Party last evening indicated willingness to get together to talk about policy differences. The president of the Labour Party (Mr J. P. Anderton) and the president of Mana Motuhake (Mr Matiu Rata) said they would be prepared to meet after Mana Motuhake made it known that it might contest marginal European seats in the General Election. It said it might enter candidates itself or ask Maori people on the general rolls to “block vote” for other candidates who indicated an acceptance of its policies. The secretary-general of the movement (Dr P. W. Hohepa) said Mana Motuhake might “throw a candidate in and mess the whole thing up” or swing results in individual electorates. Mr Anderton said yesterday: “I have made it clear from the beginning that if Mat (Mr Rata) tells us what the problems are we will see if we can assist. We are interested in talking even though he lost.” (the Northern Maori by-election on Saturday).
