Meeting attendance ‘disappointing’
Only 35 members of the Canterbury and Westland Shop Employees’ Union at- \ tended a meeting for managers and supervisors last I evening. Nearly 400 were incited. I The union’s secretary (Mr ; B. Alderdice) said he was disappointed with the atten- : dance, but he was pleased with the’ calibre of those who attended. The meeting resolved to lodge a claim for a separate supervisory and manage-
nment award. A committee j 11 was formed to settle the de-; • 'tails of the claim. • I In a circular to members; /of the union, Mr Alderdice, /explained that the margin of I management salaries over -j other workers had been ; gradually eroded. Managers -■and supervisors did not have 1! adequate protection when i companies laid off staff. j A separate award would /give retail management bet- ;! ter representation and pro- -! tection, said Mr Alderdice.
