Cost of security

PA Wellington Parliament's new security system has cost the taxpayer $318,425 since it started in June last year, the Acting Prime Minister (Mr Taiboys) has revealed in answering a question by Mr G. W. R. Palmer (Lab., Christchurch Central). The amount was spent from June 11, 1979, to May

21 this year. It included $301,625 for salaries and allowances, $lO,OOO for equipment, and $6BOO for uniforms. Parliament now has 37 security officers. “There is an offset in salaries amounting to $200,000 per annum, as door orderlies and nightwatchmen are replaced on retirement by security officers,” Mr Taiboys said.
