Obituary Mr B. H. Ballin

Mr Bernard Henry Ballin,, a leading Christchurch hote-j lier and racehorse owner, died early yesterday at hist Cashmere home. He was 54. Mr Ballin was joint managing director of Ballins Industries, Ltd. He was also, a directo- of Henry Berry, Ltd,! Quill Morris. Ltd, Fletcher Humphries. Ltd; and chairman of Allied Liquor Merchants. Ltd (Auckland), and the Canterbury Wine and Spirit Company, Ltd. He started work as a junior with Ballins in 1944, after being educated at St Andrew’s College. He was I appointed a director in 1947,| and rose quickly in the company to become a representative, sales manager, general manager and eventually joint managing director. Mr Ballin was closely identified with thoroughbred racing as an administrator, breeder, and owner. He became a steward of the Canterbury Jockey Club in 1969 and had served on the club’s committee since 1972. In partnership with ’ Mr Herb Kendall, he bred Little ■Brown Jug, winner of 11 races- from 14 starts including the New Zealand Two Thousand . Guineas this season. Mr Ballin, in partnership with his wife, raced another high-class galloper in Mister Pompous, whose main successes were in the Wellington Stakes, the Wellington Derbv, and the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Benson and Hedges Inter-Island. His sporting interests also included golf. .. Mr Ballin was a member of the South Christchurch Rotary Club for more than 15 years, and he served as president of the club. .
