T. Mitchell equals try record
Linwood’s former All Black wing, Terry Mitchell (above), equalled a notable scoring record when he crossed the Suburbs goalline for six tries in a senior rugby match at Lancaster Park south on Saturday. The achievement was all the more unusual for the fact that no other tries were scored by the team, and all Mitchell’s efforts were converted by Rod Latham. The perky Mitchell Is only the fourth man to gain six tries in a senior ' game in Christchurch. Jim Guthrie (Old Boys) was | the first, in 1906, and there was a big gap to the 1 other two — Duncan Hales for Lincoln College , in 1971 and Martin Barnett for New Brighton in ! 1976. • " i In his matches for Lin- ■ wood since 1973, Mitchell I has scored 73 tries. He ‘ scored five tries in a game against Homby th ree • years ago, and before .that ‘ achieved four tries in a : match on five occasions.
