Objections to landfill
Objections to the proposed' landfill area on coastal land; in Waimairi County have been organised on an “offi-i cial” basis, according to Crl A. A. Adcock yesterday. ' ! Cr Adcock, who is a mem-! ber of the Waimairi County Council, said the first meeting of the Waimairi Beach Coastal Protection Committee was held on Thursday evening. Cr Adcock is an exofficio member of the committee. The committee aimed to have objections collated and presented to the Waimairi County Council within two weeks. . “It appears there will be hundreds of objections. Most people feel very hot about this issue,” he said. Resistance to the scheme, which would use about four kilometres of coastline as a dump for Christchurch and Kaiapoi, would be broadbased land strong, Cr Adcock said. ” Although the scheme was being described as landfill.
committee members firmly I believed it should be des-| cribed as a dump. “There is no way the scheme could be called anything. else,” he said. ' The scheme was regarded as a serious threat to a large strip of coastline. Problems created by filling the land would include smell, birds, heavy traffic, drainage, vermin, dust, and general pollution, Cr Adcock said. It was planned for the only beach in Waimairi County.
•I Officially the scheme was • meant to last for 10 to 15 ;i years but indications, from ‘ those involved in planning (were that it would be at, ! least 20 years before the: I:dumping finished, Cr Adcock' i said. Objections to the proposal ; Would close on June 20, the ’ County Council decided on , Thursday. Initially the clos- ! ing date was yesterday but : the council agreed to an extension, subject to agree- > ment by the applicant, the iI Metropolitan Refuse Com-; 'mittee.
