Burglar sent to jail

A man who was convicted on Thursday of breaking and entering the Christchurch Polytechnic in February, from where cash and cheques totalling $10,282 were taken, was sent to prison for 18 months when he appeared for sentence before Judge Bradford in the District Court yesterday. Mark Maxwell Quartley, aged 22. had admitted breaking and entering the premises of the polytechnic .on two occasions and those of Eric Sides Motors, Ltd. also on two occasions. None of the money stolen had been recovered and Quartley had told the police that he had spent $3557 — his share of the proceeds. In view of the gravity of the offending a custodial sentence was inevitable. It must, also act as a deterrent particularly when burglary was ,so prevalent, said Judge Bradford. From the record it seemed the defendant had committed six burglaries in February and March. The burglary of the polytechnic had been “particularly grave,” said the Judge. ; It was clear; Quartley’s performance to date had been dismal, his work record; was fragmentary' and poor and he had a number of previous convictions for offences of dishonesty, the Judge said. . Counsel (Mr J. S. Halls) said that Quartley since being released from Paparua prison last December had been unable to find work. He had serious financial difficulties and was behind with his rent. The proceeds which Quartley obtained as his share, went to ,wipe out existing debts and what did not was used for living expenses, said Mr Halls. .
