Building plans

Sir, — My attention has been drawn to J. N. Mane’s letter (May 16) about the postal authorities’ proposed designation of that gem of yesteryear, Shand’s Emporium, in which my comment was sought; It is a difficult and frustrating question to answer because 5f a Government department, the Post Office in this case, wishes to designate an area for its own purposes, a local authority has no power to refuse — only to advise. I hope the Christchurch City Council’s advice would be to retain Shand’s Emporium, The council’s Reviewed District Scheme provides means to further the life of such buildings and I am writing to the Post Office authorities to ask them to consider incorporating Shand’s Emporium in their redevelopment of the area. While change is inevitable if is essential to keep some buildings of historic and/or architectural interest of all kinds and all periods — most of which can be converted to a modem use. — Yours, etc., MOLLIE CLARK, May 30, 1980.
