Memorial for instructor
A former instructor at the Outward Bound School at Anakiwa, the late Mr John Scapens, of Lyttelton, will have his association with the school remembered in a memorial endowment scholarship.
Mr Scapens worked for Outward Bound between 1968 and 1975. He was killed in an accident in 1978 while serving as assistant ’lighthouse-keeper at Cape Brett, in the Bay of Islands.
The scholarship has been set up by Christchurch friends of Mr Scapens and will pay onethird of the course fees for a young man or woman attending the course each year.
Mr Scapens had been an electrical apprentice and a radar expert in the Army before becoming an instructor for Outward Bound. He was a well known yachtsman and an experienced climber with an ascent of Mount Cook to his credit.
