Harewood’s upset win

Harewood upset Burnside andi Cranmer was too strong for Linwood United in the two division, one matches played in the Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition on Saturday. " The other match between Carlton and Woolston was deferred because both teams had international representatives attending a training school. Results:— Cranmer 5, Linwood United 0. Harewood 3, Burnside 2. Burnside, winner of the main competition, was surprisingly beaten for the second successive week by Cranmer, which is now at the top o£ the table with two good wins to its credit. POINTS TABLE

Crannier v. Linwood United Cranmer’s rearranged team ■was soon in command and had a territorial advantage throughout. The first goal • was scored by its centre-forward Nicki Sherrif. , „ The second goal was a deflection after a good hard shot by the right wing, Bonnie Paniora. Cranmer’s forwards, combining well, kept play in Linwood's half. Any breakaway by Linwood was soon stopped and the ball returned to put Cranmer back on attack. Sherif scored her second goal from orthodox field play.

Linwood defended galantly but never at any time looked a winning team. Cranmer kept the pressure on and was rewarded with a further goal by Paniora. Late in the match Barbara Mitchell scored Cranmer’s fifth goal after some good teamwork. For Linwood, Lyn Wilson worked tirelessly on defence. Harewood v. Burnside

Harewood defended a weakened Burnside team in a fast game at Hospital Corner. Burnside was without its international player, Judy Phillips, and felt this. loss. The impetus Miss Philips provides in the forwards was lacking, especially at the corner hitting. From the start, play moved swiftly from end to end, Burnside having a slight advantage.

After a series of penalty corners Barbara McCalion scored. Harewood livened up and with good teamwork took play into the Burnside circle. Where it applied considerable pressure and after many attempts, - Lyn Shultz, netted with a hard shot into the corner. Burnside rallied and Jackie Kane scored the equalising goal. Both teams tried desperately to score and right on time Alison Sutherland picked up a rebound to give Harewood the lead. In the second half Harewood started in a brisk business-like manner and was rewarded with penalty corners. After a melee in the goal-mouth the ball came out in the open and Marie Flannerv. the right-wing, scored with a liard high shot, into the top corner of the goal,
