Jail for part in burglary

A former member of the staff of the Christchurch Polytechnic, who admitted supplying information to two persons who later allegedly stoic $lO,OOO worth of cheques and cash from the building’s strong room, was sent to prison for six months when he appeared for sentence before Judge Bisphan im the District Court yesterday. Last week Stephen Michael Hurdle, aged. 24, unemployed, was convicted on being a party to the burglary which took place on or about February 6. Hurdle had admitted supplying information about the Polytechnic’s strong room, alarm system, and , other details for which he was to receive a quarter share of the proceeds of the burglary. Instead of a quarter share of the $10,282 in cash and cheques stolen from a safe Hurdle was given $3OO. the Judge was told by Sergeant K. J. Hurndell. In addition to the term of imprisonment Hurdle was put on probation for 12 months.

The Judge said he was not prepared to order the defendant to pay a third share of compensation as requested by tne police prosecutor last week. Counsel (Mr P. N. Dhyrberg) said his client had no actual involvement in the execution of the burglary. None of the stolen property had been recovered.
