'Noxious fish’ now
7. NZPA Wellington After noxious animals and noxious weeds, we now have noxious fish. Fish . are officially branded noxious for the first time in an amendment to the Freshwater Fisheries Regulations just gazetted. Listed as noxious are walking catfish, European carp, pike, three types of the deadly piranha, rudd, and tilapia. . ■ Noxious fish can be kept only with the writ-
ten authority of the Director-General of Agriculture and Fisheries. The authority can be revoked at any time and the noxious fish seized and disposed of without compensation after 24 hours’ notice. A four months transitional period will be allowed before the new requirements come into force. The . new regulations also reduce the number of fishing licences to a whole season licence cost-
ing $l2 for adults and $3 for juniors and a weekly licence costing $4.50 for adults and $3 for juniors. The ban on using cross lines or "otters” is removed and the regulations also remove the ban on using certain artificial lights when fishing for eels and other indigenous fish. The regulations extend the ban on using a onepiece rod longer than 3.4 metres to the use of any rod longer than 3.4 metres.
