Mosgiel plight
Sir, — People should not be surprised at what, is happening to the Mosgiel millworkers. It.is a classic result of the application of sound capitalist . business practices. The competitive entrepreneur,, seeking to maximise profits,', exploits the cheap labour of a n oppressed people (e.g. the Filipinos). Cheaply produced 'goods (e.g. textiles) imported under free trade conditions, undercut locally manufactured goods, produced in a situation where the dignity of labour is protected -by trade unions and social legislation. Local industry, unable to make a profit, let. alone maximise profits, closes down. Mass unemployment Capital moves elsewhere to find a profit. It is called a free enterprise -system.. It is really quite ..a just, opposed to human dignity, and thus really; anti-Christian. . Tire Government . has a serious responsibility to . . protect: people from the devastating domestic effects of a world economy built on the principle that profits .come before human dignity, in this case, the dignity, and right to work, of 1200 Mdsgiel. millworkers. — Yours, retc., THE REV.GEOFF GRAY. •May 29, 1980/
