Ready cash for fine
PA Wellington Three Japanese seamen arrived at the Wellington Central police station with $5OO recently to pay a fine which had not then been imposed. They had been arrested a few hours earlier and charged with stealing a full crate of milk the. District Court was told. The three had gone to the police station with the cash for the fine before their Court appearance.
Nabud Ogato, aged 28, Yasusi Oyoma, aged 25, and Takea Ueno, aged 28, pleaded guilty to stealing a crate of milk vlaued at $7.20. Sergeant Mary Kelly, prosecuting, said that the three were in possession of the crate of milk at 2 a.m. yesterday. When they saw a police patrol car they put the crate of milk in a doorway and made off, Sergeant Kelly said. Judge Gilbert asked a Japanese interpreter in court
whether the three could make suitable arrangements with the master of their ship to a pay a fine. Sergeant M. Hunt then told the Judge that the three defendants had gone to the police station early yesterday with $5OO cash to pay die fina. “It’s tempting but I don’t think it warrants a fine of that much,” the Judge said. He convicted and fined the three $25 each, ordered immediate payment of the fine, in default seven days .jail.
